2 Short English Fantasies (c. 1600)

The first of these two short fantasies from around 1600 survives in Ms 4° 125 of the Landesbibliothek in Kassel, a manuscript consisting mostly of English consort music. The Fantasy by Blanks is printed after Add. MS 31390 of the British Library in London: it also survives in a fragmentary form in MS Tenbury 389 of the Bodleian Library in Oxford, where the written pitch is a tone lower. Blanks´ piece is unusual in a number of ways: the opening entry in the second part, the frequent changes in rhythm and mood, and the largely homophonic texture.
The original note values have been retained. A few editorial accidentals appear printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
