White, William: 2 Pavans

for 6 instruments.

Little is known about William White, sometimes known in the sources as William White of Durham. He was born before 1585 and is mentioned as a (presumably relatively recently) deceased composer of fantasies in Simpson´s Compendium of Practical Musick of 1667. Around 14 instrumental pieces by him of survived, many of which are of very high quality, as are the two 6-part pavans printed here.
This transcription basically follows Oxford, Christ Church Library MSS 423-8, with a few accidentals taken from British Library, Add. MSS 17792-6 and 39550-4. The original note values have been retained. Editorial accidentals are shown in the usual way, printed small above the stave, applaying to the one note only.
