Lassus (Lasso), Orlande de: O doulx parler

for 8 voices or instruments in 2 choirs (2 x SATB).

Lassus´ O doulx parler comes from the Livre de chansons nouvelles, published by Le Roy and Ballard in 1571. The text was apparently adapted from a sonnet by Ronsard, with four new lines at the end. It is an intense rather than dramatic work, with very careful scored chords that yield a rich sonority. Unlike many double-works, particularly those of the Venetian composers, each choir does not always have its own bass: that in choir 1 is often above the real bass: this means, for instance, if one is mixing 4-foot and 8-foot instruments, it is crucial to have an 8-foot instrument in choir 2.
I have retained the original note values: this is not meant to imply a slow tempo. Editorial accidentals are shown in the usual way, that is printed small above the note. I am grateful to Jeannine Alton for translating the text, which has been restored to Ronsard´s original in the first ten lines.
