Viadana, Lodovico da: 2 Sinfonie (1610)

for 8 voices or instruments in 2 choirs.

These two sinfonias are taken from Viadana´s Sinfonie Musicale a otto voci of 1610, a collection consisting entirely of double-choir pieces, each of which is named after a different Italian city, covering the region from Brescia in the north to Naples in the south. At this distance it is not always easy to see the connection between piece and city. La Mantovana is clear enough, however, being based on the Mantuan composer Castoldi´s popular balletto, A lieta vita; other cases where the connection is obvious are La Fiorentina, which, like Canali´s La Balzana, uses the famous Ada di Fiorenza or Ballo del Gran Duca, and Viadana´s La Bergamasca makes use of the popular tune of that name. In the case of the attractive La Romana I have so far drawn a blank, though there is some similarity with the popular dance tune often, but in the present context confusingly, called “La Mantovana” or “Ballo di Mantua”.
The original note values in La Romana have been halved in the triple-time sections, but retained elsewhere. In La Mantovana the original note values have been quartered.
