Viadana, Lodovico da: La Padovana

for 8 instruments in 2 choirs.

This piece is taken from Viadanas Sinfonie Musicale a otto voci of 1610, a collection consisting entirely of double-choir pieces, each of which is named after a different Italian city, covering the region from Brescia in the north to Naples in the south. In several cases there seems to be a quite specific musical connection with the city: his La Mantovana (see EML 166) is based on a piece by Gastoldi, a leading composer in Mantua, and his La Bergamasca (see LPM VM20) is based on a popular dance tune of that name. In the present case I have not been able to find a connection, but would welcome suggestions.
The original note values have been retained in the first section, but halved in the triple section starting at bar 54.
