Christ ist erstanden (5 settings)

for 3 - 4 instruments.

These settings of the German Easter hymn Christ ist erstanden represent only a small proportion of the many surviving arrangements of a song, which although it certainly became part of the core repertoire of the Lutheran Church, actually predates Luther by more than a hundred years. We have already included settings of the same melody in this series: EML 273 contains two magnificent 5-part settings by Heinrich Finck. and there ale two three-part versions from the Apel Codex in EML 240. Other available settings are by Lassus (a 4, in LPM TM36) and Isaac (a 4, in LPM AN11).
In these transcriptions the original note values have been halved throughout. This means that the Lechner version, which is by far the latest, will require a substantially slower tempo than the others.
We hope in the future to publish a volume devoted entirely to settings of this enduring melody.
