East, Michael: 4 Madrigals

from The Second Book of Madrigals (1606) for 3 voices or instruments.

Michael East was born c. 1580, and died in Lichfield in 1648). He was exceptionally fortunate in having no less than seven books of madrigals and instrumental pieces published, an unusual achievement for a musician working in England. Musically speaking he was a bit of a chameleon, able to compose successfully in whatever style was currently in fashion.
These madrigals from Michael East´s Second Book of Madrigals (London, 1606) are not particularly serious works; indeed they owe much to the canzonetta, with its traditional texture of two equal high parts and a bass part about an octave lower.
In this edition the original note values have been retained, though it should perhaps be noted that Follow me, sweet love was originally written in black notes.
Michael East´s pieces work well on recorders, viols or other instruments of the period: indeed he composed a couple of books of madrigal-like pieces for instruments.
