Een vroylic wesen (5 settings, c. 1500)

for 3 - 4 instruments.

Een vroylic wesen, a song by Jacques Barbireau (c.1420-1491), was one of that select group of pieces that were frequently chosen for reworking: not including the mass on the song by Heinrich Isaac, there are around a dozen settings, mostly in three or four parts. An unusual feature of these settings is that all three parts of the original song were chosen as canti firmi. The surviving settings are quite varied in style, and include a 2-part quodlibet by Paul Rhebun, in which the original superius is combined with a tenor that quotes many German songs of the early sixteenth century (printed in LPM TM2).
The original three-part setting here is printed after the Segovia Chansonnier, with text from Tournai, Bibliothèque de la Ville, MS 94. Setting no. 2, by MattheusPipelare (c.1450-1515) follows Vienna, Nationalbibliothek, MS 18810, where it is wrongly attributed to Pierre de la Rue (Florence Basevi 2439, and Regensburg, Proske~13ibliothek MS C 120, give Pipelare); it retains Barbireau´s superius. Setting no. 3, which also uses the original superius, but transposed down a fourth in the altus is found in the Liederbuch of Arnt von Aich, published in Cologne in 1519. Setting no. 4, which presents the original tenor down an octave in the bassus, is found in Basel, Universititsbibliothek, MS FX 17-20. The last setting, from the Heer Liederbuch (St. Gallen, Stiftsbibliothek, MS 462) is in some ways the most interesting: it does not use a cantus firmus, but reworks short fragments of the original into a piece that is strangely reminiscent of Barbireau´s song.
In this edition the original note values have been halved throughout. Editorial accidentals are shown in the usual way, that is printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only; the original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar.
