Turnhout, Gérard de: 2 Parody Chansons

for 3 voices or instruments.

These two chansons come from Sacrarum ac aliarum cantionum trium vocum, tam viva voce, quam instrumentis cantatu commodissimarum, published by Pierre Phalèse in 1569. As the title suggests, this collection of 3-part music includes motets (largely of a non-liturgical kind) and chansons. Many of the latter are parody chansons, based on well-known pieces such as Lassus´ Susanne un jour or Sermisy´s Jouissance vous donneray. The two pieces here printed are also based on models by Lassus, the popular 5-part Mon cueur se recommande a vous and the 4-part Las, voulés vous.
Gérard de (van) Turnhout was born around 1520, surprisingly enough, in Turnhout (60 km east of Antwerp) and began his career in Antwerp, where he worked until 1571. He was then hired by Philip II of Spain, and the following year he moved to Madrid, where he died in 1580.
In this edition the original note values have been halved. Mon coeur se recommande a vous has been transposed down a fourth, as the original pitch is rather high (it was normal to notated parody chansons of this kind in the same key as the model, regardless of whether that made any practical sense). A few editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only; original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar.
