2 Hoftänze from the Hessen Books

for 5 instruments.

These two Hoftanz settings come from the second of the two dance collections published by the Hessen brothers of Breslau (Wroclaw) in 1555, the Etliche gutter Teutscher und Polnischer Tentz, the single surviving copy of which is unfortunately missing the top part. However, as the given melody in these Hoftänze is invariably in the tenor part, the exact melodic details of the discantus are not as crucial as they otherwise might be, so I felt justified in attempting to supply the missing part.
Although no titles are given in the source, it is clear that the first of the two pieces is based on the popular song “Es taget vor dem Walde”, which provided the basis of polyphonic settings by Senfl and others, and that the second piece is another version of Schwarzknab
In transcribing Hoftänze today there is a dilemma: whether to put them in a straightforward duple metre, with units of three bars, or in the slow triple time adopted by most modem scholars in the field, notably Daniel Heartz. In this edition I have chosen the second option, largely to be consistent with other pieces of the repertoire already Published. In the absence of hard information on the dance steps we are all equally in the dark.
Other Hoftänze found in 5-part settings in the Hessen collection appear in manuscript sources in only four parts. It is reasonable to suppose that the present setting's were also originally in four parts, and that the vagant, which occasionally displays the demented logic of an added part, was an afterthought by the Hessen brothers.
In this edition the original note values have been quartered throughout. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. Original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar. In Schwarzknab there is no repeat in Hessen: I have followed the form of the “standard” setting.
In performing these pieces it is essential to get the balance right: the tenor must ring through at all costs: without a clearly audible tenor this music can produce effects that can only be described as insane.
