Brade, William: Paduana & Gagliarda

from the Füllsack-Hildebrandt anthology for 5 instruments.

This pavan and galliard pair comes not from any of Brade´s own publications, but from the second of two important anthologies of 5-part instrumental music published in Germany in the 1600s, the Ander Theil Außerlesener lieblicher Paduanan/ und auch so viel Galliarden, mit fünff Stimmen /auff allerlei Instrumenten/und insonderheit auff Fiolen zu gebrauchen. Nievor im Druck nie außgangen... Durch Christian Hildebrand eines Erbarn Raths der löblichen Statt Hamburg bestellten Instrumentisten, Hamburg 1609.
Compared to the pavans and galliards by Brade printed in the Füllsack/Hildebrand collection of 1607, these pieces are more characteristic and modern-sounding. Brade was one of the first composers to introduce triple-time passages in his pavans: Paduana XIII in his own 1609 collection is another example. Clearly he no longer felt constrained to stay with the traditionally solemn character of the pavane: the first section of the present piece is more like an allemande, or even a canzona. The galliard is characteristic in its rhythmic variety, as well as in its dialogue between the two upper parts: a nice touch in the first section is the way the alternation between 3/2 and 6/4 bars is emphasised by the strong dotted rhythm in bar 5.
Like many instrumental collections published in Germany, Brade´s title page expresses a preference for “Fiolen”, which is probably a generic term for strings. It is reasonable to assume that professional string players would have played this music on violins, while amateurs would have used viols.
In this edition the original note values have been retained. In the galliard, the third note of bar 23 of the alto is a g´ in the original.
