Coperario, John: 2 Italian Pieces

for 5 instruments.

These two pieces are one of a large group of works by John Coperario (1575-1626) with Italian titles, but no surviving texts. As they have come down in sources otherwise consisting of normal viol consort music, it can be safely assumed that they were performed instrumentally.
While many of Coperario´s other Italian pieces seem to be madrigals, these two are more like canzonette in the manner of Orazio Vecchi, with their repeated sections (with the upper parts exchanged on the repeats) and their relatively simple counterpoint. They work very well on instruments, whether wind or strings. Although the texts are lost, we can safely assume that most phrases have feminine endings.
The music is printed after British Library, MS Egerton 3665 (the collection compiled in prison by Francis Tregian), with a couple of corrections from Oxford. Christ Church Mus. MS 2. A few editorial accidentals appear in the usual way, printed above the stave: these apply to the one note only.
