Crecquillon, Thomas: 2 chansons

for 5 voices or instruments.

These two pieces are printed here after chanson collections published in the 1540s by Tielman Susato in Antwerp; Dont vient cela from the Vingt et six chansons musicales e nouvelles a cincq Parties, 1543 and Je suis aymé from Le sixiesme Livre, 1545.
Dont vient cela is a remarkable canon based on a famous chanson of Claudin de Sermisy first published by Pierre Attaingnant in 1528. The pitch of the canon is not specified, there being only a cryptic rubric, “Chanter vous fault Estrangement” as the point of entry is indicated in the usual way there are only two possibilities, that printed in the present transcription, and one with the imitating part sounding an octave lower. I chose the upper alternative partly because it creates a more intrinsically satisfying texture, and partly because it lives up to the rubric, with the borrowed melody clearly ringing out in a different mode from what one might expect.
The beautiful Je suis aymé has also survived in a version for voice and lute published by Pierre Phalèse in 1552. Crecquillon set the same text in three parts (see LPM PC8), though there is no musical connection between the two settings.
The original note values have been halved. Original accidentals, printed on the stave. are taken as applying to the whole bar. Purely editorial ones are, however, printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
