Deering, Richard: 2 Pavans

for 5 instruments.

Richard Deering was born around 1580. When in 1610 he applied for a music degree at Oxford, he stated that he had been practising the art of music for about ten years. Two years later he was in Venice, where he appears to have become a Catholic. As a result of religious persecution in Britain he seems to have worked mainly on the European mainland; at some stage he was in Rome, but he settled in Brussels in 1617, and probably spent most of his life in the Low Countries.
Ten instrumental fantasies have survived, eight in five and two in six parts. Unfortunately most of his pavans have not survived complete, as the main source, Cambridge, King's College, MSS Rowe 114-7, is missing the top part. However, another incomplete source, London, Royal College of Music, MS 1145, does include the cantus, so the present pieces, together with two more to appear in this series, could be completed.
It is likely that Deering´s instrumental pieces were written before he left Britain. However, they cannot be dismissed as juvenalia; the two pavans printed here are inventive and expressive works that take the form quite far from its dance origins.
These two pieces are printed here after the Cambridge source, with the top part from the London one. Original note values have been preserved. The few editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
