Haussmann, Valentin: Paduana + 2 Galliards

for 5 instruments.

These pieces are taken from Haussmann´s Neue fünfstimmige Paduane und Galliarde, auff Instrumenten, fürnehmlich auff Fiolen lieblich zugebrauchen, published in Nürnberg by Paul Kauffmann in 1604.
Haussmann was a prolific composer and arranger who frequently went to music from outside his own country for his source materials. He published adapted versions of Vecchi´s canzonette with German texts, and in several of his five- and six-part dances made use of Italian and English melodies. He also included in his Intrada collection of 1604 a sequence of “English paduanas and galliards”. Where he does quote an existing melody he does not normally indicate this; the present case is no exception to this rule. At the end of the same collection there are two 4-part pieces marked Fuga, the first of which is also based on “Roland”. For other polyphonic settings of this melody, both from England and Germany, see our TM51, English Ballad Tunes in Polyphonic Settings.
In the present edition the original note values have been preserved. Editorial accidentals appear above the stave, printed small, and applying only to the one note.
