Hessen, Moritz Landgraf von: 4 Pavans

for 5 instruments.

These four pavans come from MS Mus. 74 of the Landesbibliothek in Kassel, a manuscript that is interesting in more than one respect. It includes a number of pavans apparently by English composers (Landgraf Moritz employed John Dowland for a few years in the 1590s), some with curious names, such as “The Shooting of the Guns” or “The Goat´s Leap”. But it also one of the very few sources of the kind to give instrumentation, almost entirely for wind instruments: there is a piece for 4 cornetti, a six-part intrada for “pifferi (shawms?), tromboni e fagotti”, and some very interesting mixtures of mute cornetto, flute, trombone etc. I hope to publish a complete edition of this collection in the comparatively near future, but meanwhile here are a few of the pieces without any instrumentation. There do not look especially brilliant on paper, but actually sound very good on wind instruments, especially reeds and sackbuts. No. 4 here is a quite unusual piece, with its close imitation between the two bass parts.
The original note values have been retained. Editorial accidentals appear above the stave, applying to the one note only.
