These two pieces are taken from Lassus' Newe Teutsche Liedlein mit fünff Stimmen / welche gantz lieblich zu singen / und auff allerley Instrumenten zugebrauchen. Von Orlando di Lassus F. By. Capellmeister componirt und von im selbst corrigirt / unnd inn druck verfertigt worden, Munich, 1567.
Die Fassnacht is a (pre-lenten) carnival song, and describes rather briefly the joys of fooling around a bit after the cold of the winter. By contrast the happiness expressed in Frölich und frey is derived not from the pleasures of the present, but from the prospect of eternal life.
In this edition the original note values have been halved throughout. An occasional editorial accidental appears printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
