Lawes, Thomas: The Royall Consort 'Old Version'

edited by David Pinto.

The scoring of the'Old Version' is in four parts. The top three are Treble 1, Treble 2 and Tenor, with Bass and Theorbos sharing the fourth. On this bottom line the Bass and Theorbos occasionally diverge, but not often enough to make it worth producing separate parts for the two. lt is therefore possible to perform the music in its full scoring with only these four partbooks, but players may prefer to invest in an extra bass partbook for ease of reading. The Royall Consort contains some of Lawesï finest music and its significance in the development of chamber music style and particularly of the suite form in 17th century English music can hardly be overstated.
