Lechner, Leonhard: 2 Lieder (1579)

for 5 voices or instruments.

This two songs come from Lechner´s New Teutsche Lieder Erstlich durch den Fürnehmen und Berhümbten Jacoben Regnart.. Componirt mit drey Stimmen /nach art der Welschen Villanellen ... mit fünff Stimmen gesetzet, Nürnberg of 1579. Lechner´s collection takes as its starting-point the popular 3-part songs in the style of the villanella alla napolitana by Jacob Regnart, which appeared in several editions in Germany from 1574 onwards. Lechner´s pieces are no mere arrangements, however; the composer uses elements from the ‘originals’ to create pieces that are very much his own; often it is the bass that he mines, rather than the original top parts: a quick glance at the Regnart originals (printed on the inside of this cover) will give a good idea of Lechner´s special skills.
In this edition the original note values have been preserved throughout. An occasional accidental has been added above the stave, applying to the one note only.
