Schein, Johann Hermann: Suite 15

Johann Hermann Schein´s Banchetto Musicale, published in Leipzig in 1617, consists of twenty suites, together with a couple of separate pieces. All the suites follow the same formula, consisting of a paduana, gagliarda, and courente in five parts, followed by an allemande and tripla in four. There is usually some thematic connection between at least some of the movements; in the present case the first three dances begin with a similar motive, and the device of repeating a phrase a tone higher occurs in all movements. This suite is one of those to have the most pronounced English feel to it, as for instance in the second section of the courente.
The original note values have been retained, except in the Tripla, in which they have been halved.
