Senfl, Ludwig: 2 Canonic Songs

(Wann ich des Morgens früh aufsteh, Mir ist ein rot Goldfingerlein) for 2 voices and 3 instruments or 5 instruments.

These two pieces have a very distinctive texture: their borrowed melodies appear in close imitation (not quite strict canon) between two parts of tenor range, with three more or less elaborate outer parts, with many lively syncopations.
In performing this music, two considerations are paramount: tempo and balance. The tempo should be fast enough for the melodies in the tenor and vagant to sound like real tunes, rather than liturgical canti fermi; this requirement does, however, need to be balanced with the need to keep the lively outer parts steady. As for balance, the two melody parts should sing out nicely, without necessarily dominating the texture; in an instrumental performance, they can perhaps be played on constrasting instruments, for instance, two recorders with three viols, or two sackbuts with three reeds. However, with careful use of articulation to balance the texture, it is perfectly possible to perform these pieces successfully on five recorders or five viols.
In this edition the original note values have been halved. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only; original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar.
