Senfl, Ludwig: Vivo ego, dicit dominus

for 5 instruments.

This motet by Ludwig Senfl (1486-1542) survives in a single source, MS mus 1872 of the Royal library in Copenhagen, a collection compiled by the wind-player Johann Heyde, and which belonged to the royal wind band in Denmark. It is not-able for being one of the few sources of its time to specify instruments: those mentioned are crumhorns, sackbuts and cornetts. Most of the pieces in the collection were originally texted, as indeed must have been this motet; in the source the bassus is partially texted, but no other part. However, it is clear that the repertoire was assembled for use on wind instruments, so to all intents and purposes we should regard the present piece as an instrumental work, suitable for cornetts, curtals, sackbuts, shawms, etc, or indeed for quieter instruments such as recorders or flutes.
The original note values have been halved throughout. Original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar unless contradicted. Purely editorial accidentals appear printed small above the stave.
