Simpson, Thomas u. a.: Paduana & Gagliarda

for 5 instruments.

Farmer, John: Pavan / Simpson, Thomas: Galliard.

This pavan and galliard pair comes from Thomas Simpson´s Opusculum Neuwer Pavanen / Galliarden / Couranten / unnd Volten, published in Frankfurt in 1610. Simpson´s collection includes many instances where he has composed a galliard to match another composer´s pavan. Although the collection was published in Germany, all the composers are English, among them Dowland and Tomkins. There are two pavans by John Farmer, who today is known as one of the more gifted minor madrigalists. He had a book of his madrigals published in 1599, and he contributed to the Triumphs of Oriana of two years later. little is known about his life and career, except that he was Master of the Children at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, from 1595 to 1599, after which he returned to London.
What is uncertain with the pavan is how much John Farmer was responsible for the partwriting. Simpson´s Opusculum contains pavans from John Dowland´s Lachrimae in which Dowland´s original partwriting was altered - one could say improved - by Simpson. Whatever the truth may be about Farmer´s pavan, it is an impressive piece, which perhaps shows some signs of being composed by a madrigalist: the imitation on the descending figures in 22-24 is a cliché of the English madrigalists. The galliard follows the structure of the pavan quite closely, though the last section is somewhat condensed.
In this edition the original note values have been retained. Original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar, for the sake of simplicity, with the occasional editorial accidental appearing above the stave, applying to the single note only.
These pieces may be performed on recorders, or on wind instruments such as cornetts, sackbuts and curtals. Thomas Simpson, who was a violinist, would probably have had violin consort in mind for professional performances, but would have expected wealthy amateur musicians - who generally considered the violin too noisy - to play this music on viols.
