Stephan/Bateman: Paduana and Galliard (1609)

for 5 instruments.

This paduana and galliard pair is taken from the second of the two big anthologies of 5-part instrumental pieces by German and English composers in 1607 and 1609 by Christian Hildebrandt and Zacharias Füllsack. The full title is: Ander Theil / Außerlesener Lieblicher Paduanen / und auch so viel Galliarden / mit fünff Stimmen / auff allerley Instrumenten / und insonderheit auff Fiolen zu gebrauchen ...
Many of the pieces in this collection are by Johann Stephan; two of the pairs consist of a paduan by Stephan and a galliard by Robert Bateman, who was one of several English composers and violin players working in north Germany at the beginning of the seventeenth century. It seems reasonable to assume that the galliard came first, and that Stephan composed the paduan to match. The 1607 print contains a larger number of pieces by English composers, and in least two cases, e.g. the Sommer/Dowland “Susanna” paduana/galliard it is almost certain that the galliard came first.
In this edition the original note values have been retained. An occasional editorial accidental appears printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
