Tye, Christopher: 2 In Nomines

for 5 instruments.

Christopher Tye (c. 1505-c. 1572) apparently spent his working life in Cambridge and Ely. Although known primarily as a composer of church music, he did produce a substantial amount of instrumental music, including 21 In Nomine settings, many of which are remarkably original and inventive. By the standards of continental composers of his time, he is sometimes quite unorthodox in his use of dissonances, but never arbitrary or clumsy in this regard.
The two pieces here are printed after British Library, Add. MS 31390, where they appear on f. 77 and f. 65 respectively. The original note values have been halved. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to a single note only.
