Wert, Giaches de: 2 Villanelles

for 5 voices or instruments.

These two villanelles are taken from Wert´s Il Primo Libro delle Canzonette Villanelle of 1589 a varied collection that contains Italian canzonette. as well as other light pieces with French, Spanish and Creek texts. Giaches Wert (1535-1596), like many other gifted madrigal composers, came from the Low Countries: he was born in Antwerp, but spent his entire career in northern Italy, mainly in Ferrara and Mantua. The three-part sections in these pieces owe something to the canzonetta and do not sound particularly French.
The original note values have been retained throughout. Both pieces have been transposed up a tone, to bring them with the compass of a wider range of instruments and voices. An occasional editorial accidental appears printed small above the stave.
