Haußmann, Valentin: Paduan + Gallliard (1604)

for 6 instruments.

This paduan and galliard pair comes from Haussmann´s Neue fünfstimmige Paduane und Galliarde auff Instrumenten, fürnemlich auff Fiolen lieblich zugebrauchen, published in Nürnberg in 1604. The collection consists of 37 paduan and galliard pairs, mostly in five parts, the first ten of which are texted, plus two more polyphonic 4-part pieces labelled “Fuga”, one of which is based on the popular tune known as “Rowland”. In a short explanation Haussmann mentiones that the music in his collection was intended primarily for stringed instruments, and indeed many of the pavans are written in the solemn style German musicians of the time associated with England. However, the present pair seems rather different from the English-style pieces, and is closer to the style of those German musicians such as Paul Lütkeman who were not greatly influenced by English instrumentalists. The present pieces, with their shorter phrases, and two overlapping bass parts, are, if anything, more Italian than English in style; both also seems more suitable for wind instruments than Haussmann´s other pieces.
In this edition the original note values have been retained throughout. A few editorial accidentals appear above the stave, applying to the one note only.
