Senfl, Ludwig: 2 Lieder

for 6 voices or instruments.

These two 6-part pieces by Senfl demonstrate the composer´s Josquin-like mastery of canon and imitation. In Ich klag den Tag he uses a melody that he had also employed in other, simpler settings to create a bit of contrapuntal tour de force. The melody appears in its basic form in three different parts (labelled cantus, cantus secundus and tenor in the source); against this the three remaining parts weave elaborate counterpoint that occasionally refers to the melody, but is largely free. In Ich will mich Glücks betragen.wohl the melody in its simplest form appears, in two parts (altus secundus and tenor), but at the beginning of the work all parts have the opening theme.
Both pieces are printed here after the second of Johann Ott´s anthologies of Lieder: Hundert und fünfftzehen guter newer Liedlein, published in Nürnberg in 1544. Ich klag den Tag also appears in MS mus. 1872 of the Royal Library in Copenhagen (a collection of music compiled by Georg Heide for the Danish royal wind band) with the instruction that it should be played on crumhorns and sackbuts: contrary to what some might expect, the ranges of the part dictate that the cantus firmus parts should be played on the crumhorns, and the “free” parts on sackbuts. To perform the piece on these instruments, a downward transposition of at least a fourth would be required (see below).
The original note values have been halved. Editorial accidentals appear in the usual way, that is printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. Underlay text in italics is editorial.
