2 Canzoni da sonar from the Pelplin Tablature

for 4 instruments.

These two lively canzoni da sonar come from the Pelplin Tablature, (MS 304-8 of Biblioteka Seminarina in Pelplin, Poland), a large collection of just under 800 pieces written rather carefully in German keyboard tablature around 1620-30: it is available complete in facsimile. The vast majority of the instrumental pieces are Italian in origin: most have also survived in part book sources, but a few, including the present two, have so far not been traced.
The two pieces printed here are nos. 823 and 870 in the Pelplin catalogue. A single flag in the rhythm signs translates into a minim (half note) in the transcription (as it would in normal notation of the time); this applies also - perhaps a little surprisingly - to the short triple-time sections in the first piece, in which the time-signature is a simple 3. The repeat of bars 23-4 of the second piece is written out in full in the original: there is a possibility that this repetition may be an error. Two minor emendations in bar 40 of no. 1 were made: the 5th note of the tenor is an a', and the equivalent note in the bassus an f in the source.
