5 Anonymous Villancicos (Canciero de Palacio)

for 4 voices or instruments.

These five anonymous villancicos from the famous Cancionero de Palacio (Madrid, Royal Palace) are in a variety of styles. Strictly speaking, no. 4, Deh!fosse la qui meco is not a villancico at all, but a frottola (it appears as such in Petrucci´s Frottole Libro Sesto); however, the two forms are quite similar, and the Palace Manuscript contains other adapted frottole. In fact, Zagaleja del casar is rhythmically similar to a common frottola type, as well as having a text that breaks into Italian. A los baños del amor makes very effective use of a simple device: a four-note figure in the tenor part, which relates to the second line of text (Sola me iré = So La Mi Re = C A E D).
In this edition the original note values have been halved throughout. Editorial accidentals appear in the usual way, printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. I am grateful to Jack Sage for editing and translating the texts of these songs.
These pieces can be performed by a solo singer with instruments (preferably at 8-foot pitch) or purely instrumetally. Nos. 3 and 4 can also be done purely vocally.
