Biumi, Giacomo Filipp: 4 Arie di Correnti

for 4 instruments.

Little is known about Giacomo Filippo Biumi, except that he worked in Milan, where he was organist. first at Santa Maria della Passione, then at the Basilica Sant´ Ambrogio, and finally at the Duomo. where he was appointed second organist in 1623, a post he apparently held until his death in 1653. Although we know little of his early life, the fact that canzoni da sonar named after him appeared in prints of 1598, 1605 and 1608 would suggest that he was well-known as a musician around the turn of the century, and was therefore most likely born in the 1570s, a hypothesis that would fit in with the style of his music.
These pieces are taken from Biumi´s Canzoni alla francese a 4. & a 8. con alcune arie de correnti à 4, published in Milan by Gratiadio Ferioli in 1627, a rather late date for this kind of music. It appeared as a partitura, or score, with separate partbooks, one of which, the alto, has been lost. Apart from the four arie di corente... printed here, the collection contains sixteen canzoni in four parts, and two in eight parts (to be included in our A due cori series).
These particular pieces are unusual in the way they cross the bridge between dance music and free instrumental music, particularly given that their starting-point is the corrente, rather than the gagliarda, stylised examples of which are common in early-seventeenth-century sources (Rossi, Buonamente, and particularly Trabaci); they are harmonically more interesting than much north Italian stylised dance music of the period.
In this edition the original note values have been retained. Editorial accidentals appear in the usual way, applying to the one note only.
