Bottaccio, Paolo: 2 canzoni da sonar (1609)

for 4 instruments.

These pieces are taken from Il Primo Libro de Canzoni Da Suonare A quattro, & Otto voci, Di Paolo Bottaccio Novamente composte, & date in luce in Venetia, Appresso Angelo Cardano, & Fratelli 1609. Unfortunately the alto part book is missing in the only surviving set; however many of the pieces survive complete in the Pelplin Tablature (MS 304-8 of the Biblioteka Seminarina in Pelplin, Poland), a large collection of just under 800 pieces written rather carefully in German keyboard tablature around 1620-30.
To use that time-honoured phrase, little is known of Paolo Bottaccio, except for what is revealed by the title-page of his collection, that he was maestro di cappella at Como Cathedral. He did, however, publish two other collections, a book of madrigals, and a set of double-choir Vesper psalms. His canzoni show a taste for quite bold and elaborate themes: in this and other respects his work is similar that of other composers of the time working in the Milan area, including Giovanni Paolo Cima.
In this edition the original note values have been retained, except for the triple section of La Carcana, in which they have been halved. Accidentals from the Pelplin source have been incorporated into the transcription, so editorial accidentals have not generally been necessary.
