Je suis d´Allemagne (4 settings)

for 3 - 4 voices or instruments.

The melody at the heart of these settings, which between them cover a few decades, was sung to two different texts. Stylistically the earliest setting is the simple 3-part one, with the “Je suis d´Alemagne” text, which may well go back to around 1460, while the 4-part Je suis trop jeunette from Florence, probably dates from the end of the fifteenth century. In the sixteenth century it seems that the Je suis trop jeunette text prevailed, as several settings have survived: a 5-part one by Gombert, and 4-part versions by Jean de Castro and Hesdin (the latter using the second verse, S´il est a ma poste), as well as the 3-part version by Cascongne which we have included here.
In this edition we have transposed the two settings of Je suis trop d´Alemagne up a fourth, partly because they are really low-lying, and partly to bring them into the same tonality as our no. 1. The original note values have been halved throughout (this has produced a rather “white” note picture for no. 3, which should certainly not be taken as indicating a slow tempo).
