Lemlin, Lorenz: 2 Lieder

(Ich Armer klag, Des Spilens ich gar kein Glück nit han) for 4 voices or instruments.

Lorenz Lemlin (c. 1495-c. 1550) spent most of his working life in Heidelberg, where he was Kappellmeister. He had a good reputation as a song composer, and was teacher of Georg Forster and Caspar Othmayr.
These two songs are taken from Ein Aussbund schöne teutsche Liedlein ... published by Berg and Neuber in Nürnberg in 1552. Essentially this print is a reprint of Georg Forster´s Frischen teutschen Liedlein of 1539. In one surviving copy of this collection there are manuscript additions indicating the suitability of the pieces for recorder(s) (“flödt”) and flute(s) (“pfeiff”): the beautiful Ich Armer klag falls into the second category.
In these pieces, although the main melody is almost certainly in the tenor, the other voices have much more than an accompanying role, and the songs probably work best on four voices, or four recorders or viols. However, if only one part is to be sung, then it should be the tenor.
The original note values have been halved. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
