O Venus bant (2 settings c. 1500)

for 4 instruments.

The Dutch popular song O venus bant was one of that special group of tunes singled out by fifteenth-century composers as the basis for quite elaborate instrumental pieces. We have already included two settings of this tune in the present series, both in three parts, one by Agricola (EML 204) and another by Gaspar van Weerbecke (EML 263); a setting by Heinrich Isaac, also in three parts, can be found in LPM AN12. The first setting printed here is unusual in having the melody in the cantus; in no. 2 the tune is where one, would expect to find it, in the tenor.
The two settings printed here come from Bologna, Civico Museo Bibliografico Musicale, MS Q 18, and Vienna, Oesterreichische Staatsbibliothek, MS mus. 18810 respectively. The simple polyphonic setting printed below is taken from Florence, Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, Ms Magl. XIX 121. In this edition the original note values have been halved throughout. Editorial accidentals are shown in the usual way, that is printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only. For the sake of convenience, the original note values are taken as applying to the whole bar.
