Parsons, Robert: 2 In Nomines

for 4 instruments.

The present In nomine settings are taken from MS d. 212-5 of the Bodleian Library in Oxford, a collection that contains a large number of pieces of this type.
Robert Parsons was born in Newark in 1530, and in 1570 was drowned in the River Trent a few miles away from his birthplace. He was a composer of some contrapuntal ingenuity, who almost certainly was an influence on William Byrd. Five In nomine settings have survived, two in seven parts, one in five, and the present two in four.
In this edition both pieces have been transposed up a tone, to bring the parts within the compass of a wider range of instruments. The original note values have been halved. Editorial accidentals appear above the stave, applying to the one note only. The single source has a couple of misleading sharps: bar 16 of the tenor in In nomine I has a c’ sharp, and bar 38 of the contratenor in In nomine II has a sharp before the third note; this curious feature is found in other works in the manuscript.
