Pellegrini, Vincenzo: 2 canzoni da sonar

for 4 instruments.

Vincenzo Pellegrini (d. 1631-2) was an important figure in the musical life of Milan, where he as maestro di cappella at the duomo from 1611 until his death. He published a substantial amount of church music, as well as a book of keyboard pieces, the Canzoni de intavolatura d´organo fatte alle francese, libro primo (1599).
The two pieces printed are taken from an anthology published in Milan in 1617, the Seconda aggiunta alli concerti raccolti dal molto reverendo Don Francesco Lucino a due, tre e quattro voci, di diversi eccellenti autori... novamente raccolta & data in luce da Filippo Lomazzo. La Lomazza, presumably named after his publisher (how craven) originally appeared in Pellegrini´s above-mentioned keyboard collection, with the title canzon detta la Serafina. Both pieces also appear in another keyboard collection, the Pelplin Tablature (Warsaw).
In this edition the original note values have been retained. An occasional editorial accidental appears printed small above the stave. For the sake of convenience, the original accidentals, printed on the stave, are taken as applying to the whole bar. The 1617 versions have been checked against Pelplin, and, in the case of La Lomazza, against the 1599 print, but there is nothing significant to report.
