Senfl, Ludwig: 5 Tenorlieder

for Tenor und 3 instruments or 4 instruments.

This further selection of Senfl songs presents three rather serious, Josquin-like songs, together with two settings of the more light-hearted Wohl kumbt der Mai. In all five pieces the tune is very much in the tenor, though the way the other parts interact with it varies considerably. Sie ist, die sich hält gebührlich is the most motet-like, with the parts almost equal at times: against this in Rosina the free parts mostly contrast with the tenor. The three serious songs include passages that emphasise minor thirds, and sometimes deliberately avoid musica ficta: tonally they are from the same world as Josquin´s late chansons (Plaine de dueil, Douleur me bat, etc. - see LPM AN8).
In this edition the original note values have been halved throughout. A few editioral accidentals appear above the stave, applying to the one note only. In a few cases repeated notes in the altus (and once in the cantus) have been replaced by tied notes, in the interest of melodic flow: these are indicated by dotted ties, or in footnotes.
Senfl´s mastery of counterpoint is such that these pieces make excellent instrumental numbers. When the tenor part is sung, the other parts should still be clearly heard.
