Soderino, Agostino: 2 Canzoni da sonar (1608)

for 4 instruments.

These two pieces come from Agostino Soderino´s Canzoni a 4 e 8 voci, libro primo, published in Milan in 1608. An 8-part canzone from the same collection was previously published in the present series (EML 232). There is little information on Soderino (or Soderini, as he was sometimes known). However, in 1608 he was organist at the church of Santa Maria della Rosa in Milan, and he belonged to a circle of musicians who gave performances at the palace of Luca Frescesco Brivio; the dedication of this collection suggests that the pieces had been played there. Each one of his pieces is dedicated to a different Milanese family, so presumably there must have been familes named Scotto and Olegio.
The first number, La Olegia, lies at a rather high pitch in the original, and has been transposed down a fourth for this edition. It can be found at the original high pitch (suitable for, for instance, two cornetts and two trombones) as EML 326a, together a transposed version (up a fifth) of La Scotta.
In this edition the original note values have been retained throughout; the time-signature at bar 22 of La Olegia is a simple 3. One or two editorial accidentals appear printed above the stave, applying to the one note only; the original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar.
