Jenkins, John: 3 Ayres

for 2 high instruments and continuo.

These airs come from Oxford, Christ church MS 1005, an extensive and rather beautifully-written collection containing a large number of Jenkins´ airs for two soprano instruments and bass, as well as over a hundred for a single soprano and bass. The present pieces appear on pp. 27, 37 and 21 respectively. There are no figures in the bass, and indeed it is debatable whether a chordal instrument is strictly necessary. It is likely that if chordal instruments were used on Jenkins´ day, they would have been fretted ones (e. g. lute or theorbo) rather than keyboards. For this and other reasons the continuo realisation has been kept quite simple. Although Jenkins´ music has been rather appropriated by viols players, there is not much in the style of these pieces that is strongly idiomatic, so they can be played on a variety of stringed or wind instruments. The original note values have been retained. In no. 2 the original time-signature at bar 29 is a 3.
