Jenkins, John: Duos

for Two Bass Viols & Continuo, vol. 2, ed. Ashbee.

This is the second volume of a series intending to cover all the authenticated bass viol duos by Jenkins. As with the first volume a number of the pieces have already been published by Dovehouse, but this new edition corrects errors in that edition and supplies much new material. Firstly, continuo lines, no longer extant but clearly intended to be present, have been reconstructed following the style of contemporary examples. Secondly, and of particular interest, the extensive fingering and ornamentation markings (possibly in Jenkins' own hand, but at any rate contemporary) that exist in a single partbook in the Royal College of Music have been studied in detail and reproduced for the first time. This information presents a fascinating window on mid seventeenth-century performance practice and may have important implications for the ornamentation of other areas of music of the period.
