Kindermann, Johann Erasmus: 4 Pieces

for 2 high instruments and continuo.

Erasmus Kindermann was born in Nürnberg in 1616 and died there in 1655. In fact he seems to have spent most of his short life in that city, where he was a leading figure, apart from a short study spell in Italy around 1635. He was a prolific and adaptable composer who wrote in most of the forms available at the time. These four pieces are taken from his DELICIAE STUDIOSORUM / Vom allerhand/Symphonien,Arien, Sonaten, Intraden, Balleten, Sonetten undRittornellen, auff allerhand blasenden Instrument / als Cornetten, Posaunen,Flöten /Fagotten / wie auch auff unterschiedlichen Violen. . . , Dritter Theil, published in Nürnberg in 1643. Most of the pieces in Kindermann's collection are marked "Cornetto o Violino, but there are others headed "Trombone over Violetta", "Viola", and two headed "a doi Fagotti, overo Tromboni alla quinta sopra". There is also a fifth piece for "Flauti" as well as the present four. The first piece printed here, the Aria, is marked Flauto o Violino in both parts, but the others are simply headed "Flauto"'. While the bass parts of nos. 1 and 4 here are marked Fagotto o Violon, those in nos. 2 and 3 are printed an octave higher in the original and headed Flauto. In the present edition the bass part in these two pieces has been put down an octave in the score, but a separate part for a third recorder at the original has been provided, together with a similar (but editorial) part for nos. 1 and 4. This music is harmonically complete without the continuo, and it is hard to see how it would work with a tenor recorder providing the sustained bass two octaves above any continuo. There are therefore two satisfactory ways of doing these pieces: 2 soprano recorders with a cello, gamba or bassoon on the bass and organ, harpsichord or lute playing chords, or simply on 3 recorders (SST). A slightly less satisfactory alternative would be recorders TTB with lute. The original note values have been retained in this edition. Editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
