Lassus (Lasso), Orlande de: O la o che bon eccho

for 8 voices or instruments in 2 choirs.

This unusual dialogo by Lasso (Lassus) seems to have been popular in the composer´s lifetime, as it was featured in several different anthologies, including the Gardane collection of 1590 used for the present edition: Dialoghi Musicali de diversi eccellentissimi autori a Sette, Otto, Nove, Dieci, Undeci & Dodeci Voci. The work was first published in the Libro de Villanelle, Moresche et altre canzoni, printed in1581 by Le Roy and Ballard of Paris.
There are, of course, many double-choir pieces from Lassus´ lifetime, in which the two choirs constantly imitate each other. In many of these one choir has most of the actio, and the second choir merely imitates the end of each phrase or section. But in the present little piece the two choirs have exactly the same music all the way through. It therefore provides excellent practice material for antiphonal singing and playing.
In this edition the original note values have been retained. The occasional editorial accidental appears printed above the stave, applying to the one note only, while the original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar, for the sake of simplicity. At the end of the work, where the top part in each choir goes down to b, we have provided alternatives in small notes.
