Ich stund an einem Morgen

(4 settings of the early 16th century) for 4 voices or instruments or tenor voice and 3 instruments.

These settings of the popular melody “Ich stund an einem Morgen” come from MS F. X. 1-4 of the Universitätsbibliothek in Basel, though the version by Heinrich Finck (1445-1527) is found in other sources, including Finck´s own Schöne auszerlesene lieder, Nürnberg, 1536, which was used for this edition. The tune is particularly associated with Ludwig Senfl (1486-1542), who composed eight different settings of it: there are also versions by Thomas Stoltzer (a 2), Heinrich Isaac (a 4), and Arnold van Bruck (a 6). The extra verses supplied here come from the Ott Liederbuch, where the text is more complete, and also more correct, than in the Finck print of 1536.
The first two settings may have been intended to be sung, or at least to have the tenor part sung, but those by Matthias Greiter (c. 1495-1550) and the mysterious Fuchswild seem more like instrumental treatments: Greiter´s uses a four-note figure in the bassus based on another song, “Laß sie fahren”, which appears in other quodlibets of the time.
In this edition the setting by Johann Schlend has been transposed down a fourth to agree with the pitch of the other three pieces. The original note values have been halved throughout; original accidentals are taken as applying to the whole bar for the sake of convenience, while editorial accidentals are printed small above the stave, applying to the one note only.
