Rovigo, Francesco: 2 Canzoni da sonar

for 4 instruments (low version ATTB/ATBB).

These two lively canzoni come from Partitura delle Canzoni da Suonae... Di Francesco Rovigo et Ruggier Trofeo, Organisti Eccellentissimi, Milan, 1613. Francesco Rovigo (1541-1597) studied with Claudio Merulo, and worked as an organist in Graz and Mantua. He is today a relatively obscure figure, but the relatively few works of his that have survived show a playful an d inventive spirit. The Partitura also contains a lively 8-part canzone (printed as LPM ADC14), which features anthiphonal exchanges of individual chords, something that figures in a more modest way in the Canzon Quinta printed here. The Canzon sesta has an attractively bold theme, and makes very effective use of overlapping dotted rhythms. Both pieces seem to require a brisk tempo and lively articulation.
In this edition the original note values have been retained. The occasional editorial accidentals appear printed small above the stave.
